What Is Orbital Welding?

Blog

Welding is the act of combining two or more pieces of metal together by using a machine that uses heat of some sort to melt the solder and a small bit of the metal being joined. The heat can be from an electrical spark or it can be from an open flame, depending on the type of welding. Manual welding means that there is a person doing the welding, but there are also robot welders, such as an orbital welder.

Orbital Welding

This kind of welding is done using a machine that will rotate the welder 360° around the object being welded. It is a completely automated process, done all by the robot and by computer. Orbital welding is used to weld pipes together, in cleanroom situations, and in places where manual welding would be very difficult to do. Orbital welding is the best process to use for many reasons.

Clean Welds

One reason is that orbital welding can provide the cleanest welds. A clean weld is one that is even all the way from beginning to end, has no bubbles, and has no spatter. The welds are watertight and can also be airtight, so they are a good choice when it comes to objects that need to be watertight.

Zero Human Error

No matter how good a welder is, there is always the chance of human error, which means that the weld has a chance to fail or not be as clean as necessary. Since the orbital welder is run by a computer and is a robot, there is no chance for human error to enter into the equation, which also means reduced waste. If the job is done right every time, then the pieces are always going to be able to go out to be used.

Repeatable

One of the things that orbital welding is really good at is repeatability. This means that the same quality job is going to be done from the first piece to the last piece, no matter how many pieces there are or how often the pieces are welded. Even a human welder that can provide a high repeatability rate is going to get tired and piece 5 might not be as clean a weld as piece 1. Welding robots do not get tired, so piece 100 will look as good as piece 1.

There is always going to be a need for human welders, but orbital welders have their uses, and they are very good at what they are used for.

Choosing The Right Industrial Equipment For The Job

After I started building things in my free time, I realized that there were a few things that I was doing wrong. First and foremost, I wasn't choosing equipment that would stand the test of time, which ended up costing me a lot of money in the long run. It was really incredible to see how much of a difference the right equipment made, so I invested in a great table saw, a nice compound miter saw, and even a decent drill that would make it easy to build whenever I wanted to. This blog is all about choosing incredible equipment for your hobby or business.
